The GU11 played two back-to-back tournaments in August, making it to the championship finals for each. The team placed first in their brackets for both the San Diego Premier Classic and Attack Summer Classic in order to make it to the finals. Although the results in the finals did not fall to the favor of the GU11, suffering a 3-0 loss to Albion and 4-0 loss to CV Rangers, the girls had some great moments on the field. “I am so proud of the way the girls played in both tournaments. They really connected on the field and proved their offensive and defensive abilities. After seeing the passing combinations, dribbling skill, and confidence on the field, there is no doubt that we will have an exciting Presidio season.” said Coach Beesan Abder-Ruhman.

All the girls deserve honorable mention—players include Aishling Goulding, Anabella Del Rio, Caitlyn Neves, Cami Nembach, Claire McMahon, Delany Davenport, Genette Deel, Isabel Zaller, Jacque Ortegon, Jillian Lawler, Mallory Taylor, Ryann Mojica, Sarah Tolentino, Stefany James, and Vanessa Castro.

CYSL Opening Day will be held on August 29th at the Cays from 12-4pm. This is an annual celebration for all CYSL competitive and recreational families.

Players Wanted – 12-2pm

Goalie Wars – Is your team the BEST? This is a battle for supremacy in both shooting and goalkeeping. In a preset space, players get to shoot on each other 1 versus 1 (you are allowed to use hands and feet). If you SCORE, you stay in. If you get SCORED ON, then your teammate goes up next. Teams of 4 are allowed to enter. To play, you must bring your team to the Goalie Wars Check-In Area. Your team must pre-approved by refs/coaches (based on age and skill-level).

Soccer Tennis - Get out on the court and prove your skills! Like tennis, there is a net and preset area of where the ball can land. The difference is that there is a soccer ball and NO rackets. The only way you can control the ball is with your body, no HANDS. Players play 1 versus 1 or 2 versus 2, controlling the ball on their court and then sending it back over to the other court. You SCORE when your teammate loses control of the ball. To play, you must bring your team to the Soccer Tennis Check-In Area. Your team must be pre-approved by refs/coaches (based on age and skill-level).

Refs and coaches will be supervising these games. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to play, we’ll be out there helping!

Nado Select GU8, GU9, BU9, BU10, GU11, and BU11 participated in the 2010 Crusaders Cup in preparation for the Presidio Season.

Although the GU8 and GU9 (playing up in the GU10 bracket) did not make it out of their brackets, both teams walked away with with some positive experience. Coach Ruiz had this to say, “Both teams have a lot of things to work on and it was great watching them play. I think that we have strong players on both teams and it is a matter of developing their technical skills so that they continue to have success in soccer. We will be all set for the 2010 Crown City Classic and are hoping to have a strong showing.”

BU9 had a great tourney, winning 2 of the 3 games that they played. They finished 2nd in their bracket, beating CSC 4-2 and Vista Storm 3-2 as well as losing to Scripps 4-1. “The team is full of talent and it was a weekend full of awesome goals. I can’t wait to see what they do next!” said Coach Brantuas.

As for the BU10, this was their first tournament and they made it to the Championships. “They played very hard all weekend and the final was hard-fought. We ended up losing 3-1, but I was very impressed with the soccer the team played all weekend. I’m looking forward to a very promising season.” said Coach Neves.

The GU11 had a grueling task ahead of them as they played in the u12 bracket. With a team composed of both u10 and u11 players, their skill and determination proved to be tough competition for the much bigger u12 teams. Nado tied FC Heat 1-1 in game one. Camie Nembach had a spectacular goal, catching the keeper out of position and hitting the ball over her head to tie up the game in the final minutes. The second game ended in a 0-0 tie against Hotspurs. Anabella Del Rio did an amazing job as keeper, shutting down several Hotspur scoring opportunities. This 0-0 result was positive for Nado as it secured them a spot in the semifinals. The team played tough in the semifinals, but lost 3-0 to a strong Vista Storm team. “This was our first tourney and to make it to the semis in an u12 bracket is extremely positive. We definitely have some things to work on, especially our positioning and shape. It is all apart of the learning process and I am certain the girls will catch on to the 11v11 game soon.” said Coach Abder-Ruhman.

BU11 AAA also played in the u12 bracket. The first game was won 8-1 and the second, 2-0. The team felt confident going into the semifinals, but ended up with a 2-1 loss to CSC. Coach Neves commented on the BU11, “There are definitely some things we need to work on, but this team is definitely had some outstanding moments of play. In the semis, we made some costly mistakes, but I think the boys learned a lot. They really proved themselves going into the second half a goal down. We will be playing top teams in Presidio this upcoming season and I can’t wait to see what we accomplish.”

Featured Player: Sophie Hecht played tough all weekend as center defender for the GU11.

Nado Olders, specifically GU14 AAA and BU18 Premier, had a particularly strong showing at the prestigious Slammers Futbol Classic the weekend of July 17th.

Highlights – GU14 AAA
The GU14 played against some very good Coast League teams in bracket and came out it in first place. The team dominated play in the first game versus Laguna Niguel, but three costly mistakes in transition led to three breakaway goals and a 3-1 loss. Ridley Gatlin had the lone goal.

Going into the second game, the GU14 needed a 2-0 win in order to advance. Coach Medina had this to say, “Our best game played this season was definitely our second game versus the Hurricanes. We dominated play, beating our opponents 4-0. Our defense played flawlessly, truly showing that they learned from the mistakes made in our first game. The shutout showed the team’s determination in limiting a very powerful team and the few chances that they did have were denied by goalkeepers Brooke Voorhies and Amber White. Mary Reilly had an outstanding game and finished the opportunities her teammates created for her, resulting in her scoring all four goals.”

The GU14 moved onto the semifinals, where they played RSF Attack Premier. It was an outstanding game and Nado dominated possession. Even though Nado had most of the scoring opportunities, the team couldn’t convert their chances. The game went into PKs and Nado lost 3-2. Defender Michaela Murphy was not happy about the loss to RSF, “Well, we dominated the entire game and we should have won. This was definitely a disappointing loss for us.” Coach Medina had this to add, “PKs are definitely something we’ll be working on throughout the season. For the most part, I thought we continued to improve from where we’ve started. This is our goal every time we take the field. I’m looking forward to seeing where this group can go this season.”

Highlights – BU18 Premier
BU18 Premier fought their way to the finals of the Slammers Futbol Classic, playing against some tough competition. They tied Patedores White as well as Vikings Supreme 0-0 in games one and two and defeated Titans FC 3-1 in game three. In the Championship, Nado Select met Patadores White for the second time in two days. The scoreline did not end up in Nado’s favor, as Patadores White won 2-1.

Upon his return from the tourney, Coach Hiatt-Aleu had this to say,”This tourney is top-notch. We had some great competition and over the 2 days, our squad diminished from 19 players ready to play for game one to only 11 players for the finals. Coming into this tournament and walking away with a second place finish is not disappointing, but proof to me that this team will have an exciting and successful run for top place in the Presidio’s Premier bracket.”

Featured Player: Mary Reilly glides pass Hurricanes goalkeeper, scoring one of her four goals in that game.

Nado GU8/U9 showed up to the SoCal Cup the past weekend, July 10-11th, with only having had one practice. They played in a U8/U9 bracket, but the Nado Select team was compiled of all U8 players and only one U9 player. It was the first tournament for almost all of the players, except for Abigail Dunbar and Daisy Cuthbert, returning U8 players, and Lilly Cuthbert, returning U9 player. The girls did an amazing job this weekend and they can all be extremely proud of a second place finish (out of 5 teams). The final was hard-fought, but the team lost 1-0 vs a much bigger U9 FC Heat.

“The team went into this tournament with little expectation since the girls were playing up and it was their first tourney, but from the get-go the girls played aggressively and with zero fear! They weren’t worried about the size of the players they played against. The combination of ALL of the new U8 players working hard with the leadership of Abigail, Daisy, and Lilly helped the team to great success.” said Coach Beesan Abder-Ruhman.

Featured Players: Front Row (L-R)—Emily Hunter, Michelle Cervantes, Georgette Herrera, Delaney Nickerson, Bryn Bartenstein, Abigail Dunbar; Back Row (L-R)—Lilly Cuthbert, Gracie Gehler, Rose Cuthbert, Daisy Cuthbert, Coach Beesan Abder-Ruhman; Not Pictured—Isabella Casanova, Annie Holland, Ciara Mulligan, and Anna Valades

Game Highlights
3-1 vs Breakers U9 – Daisy Cuthbert scored a penalty kick, after hitting a prior PK off the post, while her sister, Lilly Cuthbert, scored 2 great goals .

1-0 vs Hotspurs U8 - Abigail Dunbar scored the winning goal, after receiving a great pass from Gracie Gehler, who managed to control a punt from Lilly Cuthbert.

1-0 vs Breakers - Gracie Gehler scored the winning goal after controlling yet another great punt from Lilly Cuthbert.

2-3 vs FC Heat – Abigail Dunbar scored two spectacular goals, both of which were assisted by Gracie Gehler.

The GU14 White played in Kick for Hope this past weekend. The vision of Kick for Hope is to provide youth with an opportunity to play hard and give big for the children of Africa. All tournament proceeds go to children in Africa, whose lives are ravaged by poverty and disease. The GU14 were happy to participate in such a great tourney. They had an awesome weekend of soccer and at the same time helped those in need.

Coach Kiko Medina had this to say about the GU14, “We played very well this weekend, but we couldn’t finish our chances. The girls are really starting to understand the new system and they are having fun playing.”

The team tied their first game 0-0 vs Surf Premier. The GU14 dominated possession and had a lot of chances, but unfortunately missed 3 breakaways. The team lost the second game 1-0 vs Surf GU13 Premier. It was an even game, but a mistake out of the back resulted in a scoring opportunity. The girls did win their last game 2-1 vs SD United Premier. It was first time the team had beaten SD United in 2 years. The girls were extremely happy about the win. Both goals were scored by Mary Reilly. Unfortunately the GU14 did not advance to the finals since they needed to win the game vs SD United by 2 goals.

The team will be playing in the Slammers Futbol Classic next. Coach Medina made the following comment on the upcoming tourney, “This will definitely be a challenging tournament and I expect the girls to play well. There is not doubt that they will continue to improve on the new system. If we make it out of bracket, that would be a very good showing for us. My main concern is that we play well and improve on every game we play.”

Featured Player: Brooke Voorhies always commands her goalbox. Here she is shown winning the ball out of the air, giving her opponent zero chance of touching the ball.

SD Club coaches, including Ruiz and Medina, played in a friendly vs the San Diego Flash. The girls went out to USD’s Torero Stadium to cheer them on!
